Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy and Dilated Cardiomyopathies: understanding the deformation & mech

Thursday May, 17 (Introductory day) and Friday, May 18, 2007 (CRT course)


This one day course is intended for clinicians and echocardiographers who wish to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying failing function in a dilated heart and how this can be used to assess response to CRT.

We will address some of the following questions:

  • Which datasets and images are useful for the evaluation of CRT ?
  • How do strain and strain-rate change with ventricular dilatation ?
  • Why do some hearts rock ?
  • What is a septal flash and when do you see it ?
  • How do we identify filling problems that respond to pacing ?
  • How can we use knowledge on cardiac mechanics for CRT optimisation ?
  • How do we identify potential responders ?




      Additionally, there will be an introductory day on which the principles of Myocardial Velocity and Deformation Imaging will be explained and on which the participants will have the opportunity for hands-on acquisition and analysis of clinical cases.
